Matthew 6:19-21

I was inspired by this passage of scripture that I was in the middle of studying. I painted a canvas in my favorite shades of aqua and white.  Slapped the paint on randomly, quickly.  Then I ripped pages out of a mid-nineteenth century bible that is falling apart and adhered them to the canvas with mod-podge.  I distressed-inked all four edges of the canvas.  I had two pheasant feathers I attached with rusty wire, added some paper flowers and birds and a couple of 3-d flowers. Then I printed out this scripture of Matthew, cut it up, distressed it and applied it to the canvas-and after that I applied mod-podge to the whole thing.  I usually don’t do that-the mod podge layer on top, but I didn’t feel like letting loose of the paint brush quite yet!  I LOVE this piece of aqua, whites, ivory, yellow and brown and the feathers are just the natural element this canvas needed.

What is it about paper collage that I love so much? Well, it all begins with a pair of scissors and a piece of paper. Or in my case, layering colors and designs in Photoshop, then using the printed paper and scissors. I find something very satisfying in cutting paper, and you may, too. These are creative and each egg is unique and a small piece of art. Best of all they are fun to make!  You will need eggs, ephemera, Mod Podge, small brush for applying Mod Podge, twine, ribbon or not.  Rip the paper, apply mod podge on the paper, then place it randomly on the egg…finish with a Mod Podge coat when it’s done and wrap with some twine! Easy to do and they will last for years.

Bloom Where God Plants You

15 Wednesday Mar 2017

Looking at the wildflowers growing alongside River Road, what He revealed to me was this:
The world says “bloom where you’re planted” yet God would have us “Bloom Where He plants us!”
We can bloom and flourish no matter where he has planted us. Wildflowers can be nourished through the seasons of winter and spring rains, and then through the seasons of summer and fall with scorching sun and complete lack of water and nourishment bloom beautiful flowers.
We too, can be a beautiful bloom even in the midst of a scorching trial and unlike the wildflower He will always provide us with His rich nourishment. The key is Trust in Him. There is huge peace and great obedience in resting in the place He has us, no matter what that looks like.
If we will humble ourselves and call out to Him and ask Him for the ability to fully trust him and commit our lives and our spirit to Him like Jesus did (Luke 23:46), He will be faithful to answer that prayer and provide the Trust we need since we are unable to do that in our own strength.
And at the core of trust is allowing God to do what He wants with our lives!

These bookmarks start out with a rectangular double-sided piece of cardstock.  Then I layer different papers-including some from antique hymnals and old religious books-making sure to leave space for the scripture.  I will also use antique hymnal paper on the backsides.  When they are complete, I then laminate using 5mm laminate plastic.  It is thicker with a professional feel.  And it will protect them and keep them looking like new, even when you overuse them in your bible…Feel free to copy and paste them if you want!

God’s Armor

This is created with paint, paper and a 3 dimensional raised paste bird on canvas with a real feather.  The canvas has watered down paint on it with areas of almost no paint at all.  I ripped pieces of antique religion book papers in the shapes of leaves and distressed their edges.  It is a small canvas, directly in my view when I am working in my studio…sunflower

Here it is completed…I was inspired by the colors of Fall.  This scripture was too big and I was running out of room, so I wrote the whole thing out alongside part of the tree… bird

Tree collage from old sheet music

This is a work in progress…same deal -start with a canvas and begin using your favorite paints and just brushing those colors on-without too much thought. This canvas was actually used for something else originally, and I left some of the paper elements on it-painted right over them to give it some interest! I then began my tree by cutting long random narrow strips-again don’t think about it too much, just go for it.  I wanted them to look antiqued so I used distressing ink on them.  The paper roses are strips of paper rolled up and hot glued.  To adhere elements to a painted canvas you need to use an industrial epoxy if possible…or even punch holes in the canvas and wire them on.20160318_194159
